The Essence of Childhood: Cinematic Black & White Family Portraits

My family galleries are a true testament to my love of black & white photography.

There is something about cinematic black & white that dilutes everything to its most important parts - composition, expression, light. When colour is stripped away, these aspects are not only seen but felt.

I always include black & white photos in all my my family photography galleries, whether a simple child portrait, an in home newborn session or a Fly On The Wall documentary scene with an unfolding narrative.

Many of my favourite portraits of my own children are black & white.

My black & white family portraits are not just conversions from colour, they are carefully hand created by layering different black & white tones together for a timeless, cinematic feel.

Award Winning Portraits: Black & White

From Abu Dhabi to Dublin, many of my portraits of my own children are in black & white – and all a reminder of how quickly time flies! I love honest expressions and gestures (don't get me started on hands!), that will make a child instantly recognizable to any parent...

I want my black & white child portraits to look and feel like film. That's achieved through a "million shades of grey" and selective sharpening. In every one of my family galleries, I make sure to include black & white and these are often a favourite. I recommend professional Giclée pigment prints to being out the gorgeous texture.

My personal black & white pictures of my own child. They have my heart.
