Autumn is the perfect time for family photography in Dublin, with its rich seasonal colors, milder temperatures, and beautiful natural backdrops. For many families, autumn offers a wonderful setting to capture memories, especially in locations like Blackrock Park and Seapoint beach where I do my mini seasonal sessions. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a family of four—mum, dad, brother, and sister—as well as a delightful baby boy in an early autumn photo shoot.

This particular family preferred an outdoor session, wanting to avoid the stress of prepping their home and instead embrace the beauty of nature. Blackrock Park and surrounding garden provided the ideal backdrop with its lush gardens, tall trees, and seasonal foliage. The park is a treasure for family photography in Dublin, offering endless opportunities to incorporate natural textures and vibrant autumn colors. We even found a holly bush, bursting with red berries, which added a touch of color and seasonal charm to some of the shots.

The baby boy we photographed was full of curiosity and wonder, his little eyes exploring every leaf and shadow. Photographing babies outdoors brings out such beautiful, natural expressions. The golden hours of autumn result in beautiful mellow yellow light earlier in the day. I was thrilled to capture both the tender details—like his tiny hands and feet—and the warm connection shared between him and his parents. These moments give a unique glimpse into the family’s joy and love, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Family Bonding in Natural Moments
During family photography sessions, I like to focus on the authentic interactions between family members. Rather than rigidly posed photos, I encourage families to relax, allowing their natural dynamics to shine. For this shoot, I loved the moments where big brother and little sister were grabbing mum's skirts. With that said, my style is a mix of classic family portraits and candid moments, through to documentary family photography for totally un posed family dynamics that is particularly helpful for celebrations such as birthday parties, baptisms and other celebrations.
It’s these spontaneous, in-between moments that bring out the real joy and love in family portraits. Love how mum is swinging her daughter in her arms here (below).
